Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

Nintendo Wii PR logo1Hands on with the Nintendo Wii
Ladies and gentlemen, Wii have a winner!

by Special K
Having passed through the pain that was staring at my Christmas stocking knowing full well there was a Wii in there, the 25th of December rolled around and the Wii was unleashed. In hindsight I did the right thing in buying the console and second controller including the Wii Play game. Now in late January 2007, there are virtually no consoles left and even fewer accessories! To make matters worse, the consensus is that we will not have a new shipment of Wii accessories until mid February! In spite of the bad news, I'm really happy to see Nintendo have an immensely successful launch with the Wii and proving themselves to be a big player in the Next-Gen console wars. Honey I shrunk the console! My first impressions of the console were "Shit that's small". To give you an idea, my old... Read On

Bring it back, Sing it back to me

by Australian Ninja
If you want to win at this game, you'll need to recall Patches O' Houlihan's sage like advice: "Just remember the five D's of dodgeball: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and...Dodge." Winback 2 - it's the sequel that wants to be better than the original, but it's not. Truthfully I got more enjoyment from the first Winback on N64. The first Winback was a decent game for it's time. A third person action shooter game that required you to run around killing terrorists with occasional puzzles and boss fights.... Read On

Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007. PS2/Xbox Review
Our Wrestling Section Lead gets back in the ring

by The Gimmick
To be perfectly honest, I hadn't heard a lot about Smackdown Vs Raw 2007 until right before it was released, and surprisingly what I heard was mixed. It wasn't until I got a copy that I realized what they were talking about. I was intrigued before hand, being a massive fan of last year's release, on whether or not THQ and Yukes could do what they had done for so many years - that is, improve on their preceding title - this time around. And also what else could be done to this genre to make people want to go and pick up this game one more time. What does the Gimmick think? Read on.... Read On

Jason scores a hat trick

by Jason
Some people don't like sequels. After the second or third addition to a popular franchise they just wash their hands of the whole affair and write the whole thing off as a cash in. Eventually these poor narrow minded people will learn, for the most part, sequels get better with each new addition to the series, which brings us to where we are now - reviewing Call of Duty 3.... Sammy's Wii thoughts. You say you want a Revolution?
Well, you know, Wii all want to change the world.

by Hillelman
I've been having a lot of fun with the Nintendo Wii. It really is quite an amazing system. It is a trip and just so unique. I'm not going to give a standard review of the console though. This is just me shooting the breeze about the Wii and Nintendo and things of that nature. More or less, I just felt like crapping on about the various things it got me thinking about.... Read On

Guitar Hero 2. PlayStation 2 Review
I wanna rock 'n' roll, no matter how long it is to the top!

by Hillelman
This may come as a shock, Buttonholers but I am, as always, telling the truth: Not all of my friends/acquaintances are as geeky as me. In fact, a few of them wouldn't even qualify as geeks at all. Some of them rarely, if ever, even play videogames! I don't know what is wrong with them, but I guess nobody is perfect. However, occasionally there have been games that not only enthral me and my 'hardcore gamer' brothers & sisters, but also manage to capture the attention and affection of my generally 'non-gaming' mates. Guitar Hero 2 is just such a game. ... Read On

A bit of news on 2 Sega titles that are likely to rock

by Hillelman
Here is some news Sega sent out recently, regarding two games I think will be highly anticapted by many Buttonholers. Firstly, any games and movies based on comic book characters will always attract plenty of attention from Buttonhole and our readers. So I'm sure you'll be happy to have a read of Sega's Press Release about the upcomming Iron Man game, based on the film adaptation. Below that is the Press Release about the new Sonic The Hedgehog game, for the Xbox 360. I have learned by now, through the emails I've receieved about the subject, that many of you folks share my love for Sonic. His Xbox 360 title looks like a real return to form too. Check it out!... KOEI Ltdare obviously firm believers in the "if it aint broke don't fix it" philosophy, as evidenced by this game, which is the latest in a series that has graced just about every game playing device known to man. At first the premise was simple; beat the living shit out of the controller to cut down vast hordes of blokes that all look the same.... Read On

Sometimes I wonder just how many people watched Back to the Future Part Two. I mean did they invent hover boards in that movie, or did hover boards predate the film? I don't know. Sammy's PlayStation 2 Retrospective (and Max Drive review)
Make what you will of my inane ramblings

by Hillelman
Buttonhole's friends at Realgamer sent me a lovely little device for the PlayStation 2 called Max Drive (which I shall discuss in more detail towards the end of this article). That cool little gadget actually wound up breathing some new life into some of my favourite PS2 titles. In turn, it got me thinking about the PlayStation 2 in general and all the good times I have had with the system. Since the PS2 has now reached the later stages of its lifespan, I figured this would be a fine time to take a look back at the old girl and reflect on some of the fun she's provided me with.... Jason won't pretend to know, or like, anything about the NFL

by Jason
American football is a subject I claim complete ignorance of. I know it involves large men in larger padding occasionally hitting each other and another not quite so large bloke that comes on to the filed every now and then to actually kick the ball. But that's about the extent of my knowledge. So the NFL fans (they must exist or there would be little point to EA Games punching out this title on a yearly basis) will have to excuse me if I say something stupid.... Read On

My reviews for the system's software kept getting stuck on the backburner, while I was dealing with other things (some of those things were good, others...not so much). Nintendo Wii Launch Date Announced
Wii set to hit our shores just in time for Christmas!

by Special K
Kris's Comment Now it gets interesting Nintendo announce the Wii release date! The Wii will hit our shelves on 7th of December 2006, and with a retail price of $399.95 - about the same as a PSP, a free disk of Wii sports games - there's a lot to be happy about! I know I'm not the only member of the Buttonhole family who is keen to get their hands on the new Nintendo hardware and with the Playstation 3 release pushed back to March 2007, it will be interesting to watch the next gen console wars heat up!... Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
