Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

King of Fighters 02 PS2 BoxKing of Fighters 02. PS2 Review
Australia's King of Ninjas kicks some pixelated arse

by Australian Ninja
After various shenanigans, including the bankruptcy and resurrection of SNK, KOF 02 arrives on the merry old PS2. Considering the spotty releases of old school 2-D fighters in PAL regions it's almost a miracle that this game made it to Australia. To put things in perspective the first Australian KOF release was KOF's 94 and 95. Around 1995-96. No more were released here until KOF 2000/01 on PS2 in January 2005. Which means that KOF's 96-99 have only been released in Japan and US territories and those of us who have followed the series would have had to import to play them. Enter KOF 2002. Finally...good gameplay has come back to the KOF series. Over the years it's had its ups and downs but I can honestly say that 2002 is one of the greatest of the King of Fighters series. Other pe... Buttonhole's THQ LOADED 05 Report.
THQ had a show. We went. These are our thoughts. The end.

by Hillelman
Special K and I recently attended THQ's LOADED 05 Press Event in Sydney (we live in Melbourne, for those keeping score). We had a great time. Special K's words are in italics and mine are in regular font, just so you know who is saying what. Dig in. And feel free to come back and indulge in more than one helping, for no extra cost. ... 187 Ride or Die. PlayStation 2/Xbox Review
Jason pops caps in many fool's asses. And plays this game.

by Jason
To say this game is influenced by rap and all that goes with it( i.e.:, pimped up cars, more bling than Mr T and the occasional bit of hot lead action.), is like saying the pacific ocean is a bit big and slightly wet. Rap imagery and culture abound in this game and as you would expect of a production like this one the soundtrack was written and produced by rap artist Guerilla Black, never heard of him myself, but not being a rap fan that's probably not surprising. However the music does suit the style and mood of the game quite well.... Read On

So, that's what it looks like. Not at all what I was expecting, but that's exactly what Nintendo promised! Therefore I won't try disguise other people's words as my own and feed you a bunch of bullshit. Fable: The Lost Chapters. PC Review
Sammy's lost chapters usually had something to do with beer

by Hillelman
So I'm wearing a dress and a chicken hat, shooting lightning out of my fingers (Palpatine style) and zapping a dude until his head pops right off. I then kick the detached head around like a soccer ball for a while. After that I head off to do a spot of fishing, get a few new tattoos and cap it all off with a few rounds of cards and several beers at the nearest bar. That's a typical day in Fable: The Lost Chapters and it is also the kind of thing that makes me glad to be a gamer.... Read On

If you’re Fast and Furious then this game is for you baby! Street racing is the game, it’s illegal and it’s exciting. Killer 7. Gamecube/PS2 Review.
I don't know why I love you, but I do.

by Hillelman
What the f*#k is this? When I began playing Killer 7 that is exactly what I asked myself. As a matter of fact, I’m still not sure of the answer (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). This game messed with my head and confused the hell out of me. At times, it frustrated me greatly. On a few occasions, it even reduced me to some sort of raving lunatic, as I sat screaming abuse at my TV. ... Read On

Kessen III. PlayStation 2 Review
Samurai warriors galore, but thankfully no Tom Cruise.

by Australian Ninja
The last Samurai? Apparently they lied to us. There are a million of them in this feudal free for all. Kessen 3 is a hybrid slash em up / strategy game. It’s very similar to KOEI’s other weapon based combat game Dynasty Warriors but different enough that it’s worth playing. Think of Dynasty Warriors with a more zoomed out view and you’re in control of a whole troop of soldiers instead of one lone warrior. The troop control as if they were one lone soldier though, all moving together and staying in formation until they get in the thick of battle. At any time you may be in control of two to eight troops in a battle. It is only possible to manually control one troop at a time. Switching to any other troop [for manual control] is simple to do and essential to winning. ... Read On
Viewtiful Joe 2. PS2/Gamecube Review
Better late than never, baby.

by Australian Ninja
Australian Ninja a go go baby! Basically VJ2 is an old skool side scrolling beat em up game tricked out with fancy "cell-shaded" graphics and technically is in 3-D, but plays exclusively as a 2-D game. It's tough but fair, annoying and massively addictive fun to play. Just think Streets of Rage plus some Klonoa with ten tons of in your face attitude, bright superhero costumes and the Japanese wacky factor.... Read On

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
