Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

Franchise Embarks on a Brand-New Adventure for Nintendo DS

by Hillelman
Today Ubisoft announce Battles of Prince of Persia®, a new game developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS™. Battles of Prince of Persia® is a turn-based tactical game driven by a collectible card system set in the Prince of Persia® universe. Developed by Ubisoft’s Montreal studio, the game puts players in control of large armies from different regions that are battling for supreme power. The game also features multiplayer modes that allow players to battle it out with friends or trade cards to customize their decks. Battles of Prince of Persia® is scheduled for release late 2005. About the Game: Battles of Prince of Persia®’s storyline takes place b... Read On
Pariah. PC/Xbox Review
Pariah, Pariah, pants on fire.

by Hillelman
Oh, man, another First Person Shooter (what do they release, like 15 of these a day?). And this is a highly derivative one at that. Great, just what I need. Well, I guess I better give it a shot all the same. Hey, this is kind of cool, nothing special but still decent fun and it looks rather nice as well. Four hours later…my eyes are glued to the monitor. Yep, I think it is safe to say that Pariah really grew on me. ... Read On

Batman Begins. Xbox Review
What the hell is he? He's Batman.

by Hillelman
I’m probably going to be a bit biased with this one. I love the Batman Begins movie and, as this game does such a fine job of capturing the look and atmosphere of the film, I was able to quite easily overlook its various shortcomings and have an excellent time with it. That’s not to say it is an otherwise poor game, all I mean is that if you don’t care so much for the Bat, you may not find this one quite as great as I did. ... Read On

Tenchu: Fatal Shadows. PS2 Review
Beware the deadly shadows...and the poor quality gameplay

by Australian Ninja
Ninjas are totally cool. You may think otherwise but then you’d be totally wrong. Trust me, I’m a ninja and I know these things. Tenchu: Fatal Shadows is the fourth game in the Tenchu: Steal Assassins video-game series. This sequel is clearly for the fans. There is little on offer for anyone who has not played any of the previous games. I enjoyed the original Tenchu on PS1. At the time it was an original and highly creative game, with many horrible flaws. As much as I tried I just never had the same enthusiasm for Fatal Shadows.... Read On
Destroy All Humans. PS2/Xbox Review
Keep watching the sky!

by Australian Ninja
Ka-boom!! (That was supposed to be an earth-shattering ka-boom.) The alien invasion is on again. But this time, you play as the alien. Meet Crypto; the surly, sadistic "little green man" with a healthy hatred of puny humans. Destroy All Humans (D.A.H.) offers players an extra large helping of needless destruction and a ridiculous amount of explosions. Explosions are good, mmkay? The basic structure of the game alternates from Crypto’s on-foot sections, to flying saucer sections in each mission. After accomplishing his main objective on foot (impersonating the mayor, killing scientists, hypnotising army officials) Crypto high tails it back to the saucer and he then proceeds to blow shit up. Buildings, tanks, people, mounted rocket launchers; they all go ka-boom, in super happy fun explosions!... Read On
Batman Begins, the game. Preview/Press Release
Batman fanatic Sammy is looking forward to this one from EA

by Hillelman
I think most people would know by now that I am a HUGE Batman fan. So I had been eagerly anticipating the Batman Begins movie. It pleases me greatly to say that it did not disappoint me one bit. It totally rocks; they finally did the Bat full justice in a live action flick! If you haven't seen it yet, you really should. If you like the character even half as much as I do, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't love this movie. There is a videogame adaptation of the movie too (as you would expect) which is published by Electronic Arts. And, thanks to the awesome news that EA has decided to come on board the Buttonhole express, I should have a copy of the game by next week. Once I get my hands on it (the game that is), I will play that sucker extensively and tell you how it fares in my full review. Between now and then, however, I figured I'd post the official press release for the Batman Begins game, along with a couple of tasty screen shots. ... Read On
Haunting Ground. PlayStation 2 Review
Now we can all run away like little girls

by Hillelman
Running away and hiding; sometimes that really is the most sensible option. When you are a sexy, young, blonde chick and a bunch of insane freaks are intent on doing you grievous (life ending) bodily harm, I’d say that’s a good reason to make a bolt for it. It seems Capcom believes the same thing, because in Haunting Ground you do play as a sexy (though very pale, but she’s British so that isn’t her fault), young, blonde chick, by the name of Fiona Belli. You do have a bunch of insane freaks hoping to bring about your demise. And you do run away and hide. Constantly!... Read On

Good, clean, large scale violence

by Hillelman
Yes, my friends...we are the champions. Snowblind Studios (developers of this game) love their hack ‘em up action, that’s for sure. If, like the Snowblind folks, you dig games along the lines of Diablo and Gauntlet you should feel right at home with Champions: Return to Arms. ... Read On
Doom 3 Xbox Review
The console port from hell (in a good way)!

by Mugwai
We knew the X-Box would provide us with a plethora of pc FPS ports for better or worse and let’s face it; most of them are as average as my genitalia. Generally FPS games just don’t play as well with a controller as they do with a keyboard-mouse interface (unless it’s specifically designed for console like Halo). Many ports are also lazy and don’t inspire an immersive experience on console. Well I’m happy to report that Doom 3 is none of these things, so sit down, plug in and you better obtain some spare pants just in case.... Read On
Activision Product Websites
A bunch of websites, for some great upcomming titles

by Hillelman
Activision is a very busy game company! Take a look at all these titles they have lined up for release (actually, I think some of them are already out, but you can find that out for yourselves!). I think you will agree, there are some nice ones on the list. If you want to have a look at the websites for each of these games; where you can find information, screenshots, trailers, wallpapers and all that kinda deal, just click on the links. The magic of the internet will whisk you away and take you on a wonderful journey... or something like that. The games of E3 part 4: Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation2
360? PS3? You won't need 'em for a while yet!

by Hillelman
I was going to do separate articles for these two consoles. But that just didn’t seem very sensible, because most of the games from E3 will be available for both systems. I decided I’d just condense them into the one article in the hopes of saving myself some time… because I am one lazy, lazy bastard. Seriously though, there are only so many hours in a day and I’ve got a heap of current games still waiting to be reviewed! So, unless I note otherwise, you can just assume that all of these titles will be playable on PS2 and Xbox. ... Read On
War is hell on PlayStation 2! Double Review
Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 and Full Spectrum Warrior

by Hillelman
In the real world (mind you, I don’t spend too much time there myself), War is no kind of good, right? Pretty much everyone who visits our site knows that (I hope). In videogame form though, war can be a whole lot of fun. Buttonhole recently received the PlayStation 2 versions of two war-related games: Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 (from Ubisoft) and Full Spectrum Warrior (from THQ), both of which use a first person viewpoint. The two games are also both a little bit different to the run of the mill FPS war games out there, so let’s take a look at ‘em, beginning with Brothers in Arms.... Read On
The games of E3 part 3: Nintendo DS & GBA/Micro
It is the Nintendo handheld's turn

by Hillelman
I’ve been reading the press releases, checking info on the web, staring at the screenshots and downloading the video, all in the name of giving my opinion regarding some of the games of E3, despite the fact that I wasn’t even there! Anyway, part 1 was the games for Sony’s PSP and part 2 was about the titles for Gamecube. This third instalment covers the software for both of Nintendo’s handheld systems. The first half is about the DS games and below that you’ll find info on the Game Boy Advance/Micro games.... Read On

There's still a lot of life left in the mighty little 'cube!

by Hillelman
So many games! So… damn… many… games. E3 is pretty crazy, it is next to impossible for me to really cover every single game shown there in any kind of depth. So I am just picking out some of the bigger names, or more interesting looking games from the show. If you have any questions about any of the games I didn't talk about (or the ones that I did for that matter), you can always just email me me. In Part 1 we covered some of the games shown for Sony’s PSP format. Now let’s take a look at what’s planned for the little box of fun, Nintendo’s Gamecube.... Read On

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
