Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

Music Dvd Review

Coldplay. What a band! The British music scene really outdid themselves with this band when they burst onto the international stage 4 or 5 years ago. A band that has an emotional sincerity akin to fellow British band Radiohead. 2 brilliant full-length albums to date and now this release â€" a stunningly crafted live concert DVD and Music CD double pack.

Main Feature:
The DVD starts up with a beautifully engineered menu system incorporating an animated system based around the artwork from Coldplay’s latest release “A Rush of Blood to the Head.

Head to the concert section and you have a 2-page menu of the various tracks performed in the concert. Opening this stunning show is the band’s opening single from “A Rush of Blood to the Head titled “Politik. The Piano leads us into the first verse where the rest of the band join in and the song really breaks. Not letting the tension break, the band launch into “Got Put a Smile Upon Your Face. Next up we have the title track from the latest album named “A Rush of Blood to the Head, and from here, the concert starts in earnest.

Moving through songs both old and new from both albums we hear all of our favorites such as “Daylight, “Trouble, “Don’t Panic, “See You Soon, “Everything’s Not Lost and “Amsterdam. Finally we get to the real tear-jerkers and personal favorites of mine. “Yellow, the huge single from the band’s debut album sneaks up with a new intro including synthesizers and new vocal melodies and segues into the all-too-familiar acoustic guitar intro that we know and love. This song would have to be one of the stand-up performances of the DVD. Skip forward a few great tracks and along comes “Clocks, another piano-riddled masterpiece by a band we expect no less from. And what a performance! Closing the show we have the brilliant “Life is for Living, and no one could ask for a greater song to close such a brilliant show with.

Bonus Features:
The Bonus Features included on this disk include an in-depth tour diary, lyrics to all the tracks, tour dates, info on the crew, credits and weblinks. The tour diary features 10 short films shot while on their 2002/2003 world tour. These include some great moments with the band and crew on the long tour and show an insight into the world of Coldplay while they’re on the road.

Also included with this DVD is a bonus live CD recorded in our own Sydney â€" Australia, again, recorded as part of the 2002/2003 world tour. But wait, there’s more! The Bonus CD has its own multimedia bonus features included, and if you pop the CD into your PC or Mac you’ll get a bunch of Computer-Only multimedia extras. All this extra content at no extra cost! Who could ask for more?
Video

This DVD has a visual palette second to none as far as music DVDs go. It’s clean, it’s shiny, and it’s totally brilliant. Yet it still has edginess to it and some angles are a tad grainy. Purists may turn their nose up at this, and if so, I turn my nose up at them. A bit of grit and grain never hurt anyone, especially accompanying a brilliant act that in it’s self has more than enough grit and grain in the music. A perfect match. There are few aliasing/compression problems and none you wouldn’t expect from a show shot live from multiple angles.

Audio:
Now this is where this DVD really comes into its own. The audio recording of this live show is second to none. Most live music DVDs have a nastiness to them, with the exception of a few choice titles. This DVD has superb audio dynamics from start to finish. It’s open, it’s airy, it’s full and it’s thick and rich. Brilliantly recorded, mixed and mastered, no expense has been spared with the audio production on this one.

Overall:
If you’re a fan of Coldplay and you don’t own this DVD, ask yourself why not! It’s a top-class release from a top-class act and has quality written all over it all the way. I was given this DVD as a gift (thanks Shane), and it has been a joy to watch over and over again.

Yet again, another worthy addition to anyone’s Live-Music DVD arsenal.

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
