Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Damageplan and Pantera, was killed during a shooting spree at a Columbus, Ohio, nightclub Wednesday night. He was 38.
I can fondly remember the Pantera concert at Festival Hall, Melbourne back in 1995. Being almost crushed, meeting up with my brother shortly after he dislocated his hip in the mosh, then having him vomit on some poor guy's shoes at the bar near the back of the venue.
It was a great show and despite all the injuries, I still have my Far Beyond Driven guitar pick, which will now serve as a lasting memory of a great guitarist and very influential thrash metal band of the early nineties.
I have Ando to thank for introducing me to Pantera and his enthusiasm for their "Vulgar Display of Power" release. I did lose touch with the band for their latter releases, but will always remember the famous scene from the Pantera Home Video credits with Dimebag busking on the streets.
A tragic loss of a great guitarist and performer who always had plenty of time for his fans and gave his all on stage.
We should take time to consider the fact that we have witnessed yet another senseless shooting death in the United States; the country where guns and ammunition, can be purchased over the counter much like any other day to day grocery item.
Surely the NRA and gun owners should wake up to the fact that proliferation of guns does not make anyone safer, it just leads to tragedy.
