Here's the detailed match by match report from that masked menace himself: The Gimmick!
WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
The opening match was for the Tag Team title between Christian and his bodyguard Tyson Tomko Vs William Regal and WWE’s version of Forest Gump, Eugene. Eugene was wearing Hulk Hogan gear and I was surprised to see him wearing it the right way around for a change. Not a bad opening match with all four guys doing enough and Eugene playing the fool and doing it well. I swear if he was around 10 years ago he would have been Doink the Clown’s sidekick. The end came when Eugene went for a dropkick on Tomko but wrenched his knee legit. As team charisma went after Regal, Eugene hopped over and rolled up Tomko for the 1-2-3. After the match Eugene had to be carried out of the ring. Who knows how long he’ll be out for? With Regal’s nose bloodied and Eugene with a gimp knee, as winners they looked like the biggest losers ever.
Backstage Christian & Tomko meet up with Edge. Initially Christian is hostile to Edge until Edge asks his "brother" if he wants to be world champion. Instead of pummeling him all three walk off together.
WOMAN’S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Next match is for the Woman’s title between Trish Stratus and Lita. This match was a real fizzer, but not because of their abilities. Midway through the match Lita sent Trish to the outside and went for a Lou Thesz Press from the apron. She landed wrong and blew her knee out as well. That’s two in a row! Lita tried to fight on but, like comparing most to John Holmes, she just fell too short. Trish won with the Chick Kick and got the 3 count within 5 minutes.
Backstage again Edge is in GM Eric Bischoff’s office, oddly asking for Christian to take his place in the World title match later in the night. Edge thinks that he can’t win since HBK is referee and asks for the winner of the main event to face him the next night on RAW. Bischoff flat out refused and Edge stormed out. Edge meets up with ol’ HBK himself in the hall and he tells Edge that he will call the match right down the middle. But if anyone touches him he will retaliate. Also, if the opportunity arises, he will enjoy counting his shoulders down Uno, Dos, Tres! I was never any good at French.
INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
The champ Shelton Benjamin hits the ring to take on Maven or, as my dad calls him, Marvin. Yeah I know, I don’t get it either. Maven and Benjamin begin to lock up but Maven takes off and heads to the outside, where he spends the next five minutes insulting the crowd of San Juan. Shelton has enough of it all and chases after Maven and the challenger says he’s walking. Right before he is counted out he heads back in the ring but is then rolled up from behind for the 3 count. Maven screams that the match didn’t count, (I love his new found persona!) and that he wants a rematch right then and there. He eggs on the champ by saying he’s less than a man which infuriates Benjamin. He hits the ring then hits Maven with a T-Bone suplex finisher and gets the 3 count. Benjamin has beaten Maven twice in one night. I’m sure there is an Elton John joke that can be put in there somewhere.
Backstage interview with both Muhammad Hassan and Khosrow Daivari. He ranted on with the same old anti American shtick that they’re known for and also how they had been treated as second class citizens even in Puerto Rico. As clichéd as it was I still like it.
MUHAMMAD HASSAN Vs JERRY “THE KING” LAWLER
Nothing spectacular about Muhammad’s debut match and I am willing to chalk it up to nerves. Hassan beat the king with a nice STO for the 1-2-3. Personally I think The King should give it away as he’s not working that great in ring and is only being used as cannon fodder. As a side note, I love Hassan’s and Daivari’s entrance music. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Backstage interview with Batista and he was asked what his chances were in the main event. Before he could get too far into the answer he was interrupted by former Evolution member Randy Orton. Orton basically asked Batista when it came to the crunch, would he kick Triple H’s ass or kiss it? Batista said if the opportunity should arise to take the title, he’s taking it.
GENE SNITSKY Vs KANE
Before the match The Coach replaces The King as the announcer for this revenge match. They also played a video history between Kane and Gene “it wasn’t my fault” Snitsky. It was a seesaw battle with both big men hitting hard and taking an advantage whenever it arose. It could have gone either way, especially after Snitsky did his best Mike Tyson impression and tried to chew Kane’s ear from his head. But it was the Big Red Machine who hit the trademark Tombstone piledriver for the 1-2-3.
As the Elimination Chamber slowly descends from the arena ceiling we head backstage as Triple H and Batista are nose to nose. Triple H wanted to know if what he heard earlier was true. Batista told him the first thing he and Ric Flair taught him was basically to never show your hand and that he was first and foremost a member of Evolution. Everything looked all lovey dovey until Batista said that is unless Triple was eliminated before he was - in that case he'd be going all the way. From there we head back to the ring as RAW GM Bischoff is in the ring and he goes on about his creation (the chamber) and how it’s this and that, blah, blah, blah. I know where he’s headed once he goes backstage; straight to the toilet for some personal time.
THE MAIN EVENT: THE ELIMINATION CHAMBER FOR THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
TRIPLE H Vs CHRIS BENOIT Vs CHRIS JERICHO Vs EDGE Vs BATISTA Vs RANDY ORTON WITH SPECIAL GUEST REFEREE SHAWN MICHAELS
Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho are the first 2 men to start this huge title match. For the next 5 minutes they went hard (that's not something I want to think about- Sammy) and there were some close 2 counts. Benoit hit a big time superplex on Jericho when Triple H entered the match. He handled himself nicely against his 2 opponents, even busting Benoit open by sending him face first into the steel. Triple H went for a pedigree on Y2J, but he back dropped him over the top and The Game hit with a vicious bump on the steel below. Not long after that the next participant entered and it was Edge. Edge hit the ring and he delivered a hard spear to Triple H (again...don't want to think about it- Sammy) and then the Edgecution for a close 2 count. He was stopped by a fliying top rope kick from Jericho, who was then catapulted into the steel by Edge. Triple H came back and went for the Pedigree on Edge but again it was countered, and he was catapulted into the steel beam, followed up by a flying body press on Benoit for a 2 count. Jericho is busted open now as Benoit tries to Cross-face Edge. And like a midget trying to high jump, he was unsuccessful. With all 4 men laid out, the next pod is opened and it is “the Son of the Ace” Randy Orton. He went straight after Edge then a flying body press on The Game. He continued to work on Triple H on the outside, rolled him back in then hit the RKO on an unsuspecting Y2J. He went for it on Benoit, but the Wolverine countered it with a Cross-face. Triple H taunted Orton but Benoit turned his attention to The Game and apply the Sharpshooter on him. Orton got to his feet and delivered an RKO on Benoit and everyone is down. Edge was measuring Orton for the spear but he moved and Edge speared HBK instead. He then hit it again, this time on Orton and went for the cover. Guess what? No referee, so Edge slaps Michaels around to wake him up and he cops sweet chin music for his troubles. Jericho hits the Lionsault for the 1-2-3. The first elimination is Edge. Triple H tried to hit Y2J with The Pedigree but Benoit hit him with 3 german suplexs then went for the move of the night. He climbed to the top of the chamber and hit his patended flying headbutt. Jericho applied his Walls of Jericho while Benoit used his Cross-face on the fallen Game. But then Batista comes in and makes the save. Batista takes care of Orton, Jericho and Benoit! He then turns his attention to The Game. The potential showdown is stopped but within no time Batista pins Benoit, followed by Jericho leaving just 3 men left. Orton fought his way out of the 2 on 1 situation and hit the RKO on Batista. Triple H didn’t save him and Batista was eliminated. The end came when Orton hit the RKO on The Game but HBK was distracted by Evolution. Shawn dropped Flair but Batista took care of Orton. Triple H then Pedigreed Orton to become the NEW World Heavyweight Champion. (He should have pedigreed him twice I say- Sammy)
It was a reasonable PPV, made good by the main event and not much else... except for the brief glimpses of the divas shown around the pool looking better than awesome. For freeze frame quality I give it a good 7 out of 11 Buttons. The show did help in gearing me up for the Royal Rumble in 3 weeks.
* In a dark match prior to the New Year's Revolution PPV last night, Hurricane & Rosey defeated La Resistance.
* Eugene and Lita's injuries from last night were both legit. Eugene has a dislocated patella and will be evaluated today by doctors. Lita has a sprained knee but it doesn't appear to be too serious.
* WWE management considered the undercard of the PPV last night to be the weakest in years and were putting the show soley on the main event.
* Management decided to keep Maven's match short last night due to concern of his inability to carry a PPV quality match. The general feeling is that Maven isn't working as hard as he should be.
* WWE was very happy with Puerto Rico as a PPV city. The crowd was hot and accommodations were very good.
