FROM SAFE MART CENTRE, FRESNO CA.
The 17th annual Royal Rumble PPV, on paper, looked fairly strong before the event aired and I doubt many people would have been disappointed after it was finished. With two championship matches, two grudge matches and the Royal Rumble match itself, the PPV proved to be a great start to 2005.
OPENING MATCH
EDGE Vs SHAWN MICHAELS:
I loved the way the WWE had been pumping this match up for the last few months. With neither man facing the other in one on one competition before, it made the contest that much more exciting. On a side, note why didn’t they open with a tag team match like the early Rumble days? Oh that’s right there are no tag teams anymore. Sorry I forgot. Anyway the match itself was awesome but what do you expect from these two? I love Edge as a heel, but not as a psycho. Oh well, at least he’s getting the push he deserves. The match went for 20 plus minutes with Edge gaining a huge victory over ol’ HBK with some help from the ropes. But remember you can do anything you want as long as you don’t get caught! There’s something for the kids to remember, just kidding. My only problem was Shawn kicking out of Edges Spear, but that’s my little pet peeve. You don’t have to have a problem with that. (That's nothing, I've seen HBK kick out of everyting, he once got shot at point blank range and kicked out- Sammy)
WINNER: EDGE
Backstage Bischoff and Theodore Long are with the lottery tumbler. Ric Flair and Eddie Guerrero are ready to pick their numbers. After picking their numbers Flair looks ecstatic but Guerrero doesn’t, and with a move that the smackies in downtown Melbourne would be proud of, Eddie swipes Flairs number and runs without anyone noticing. Funny stuff!
We also see two intellects come together as Heidenreich and Snitsky talking about their hatred for caskets and their admiration for each other. Snitsky says he has a plan for the Casket Match tonight. You could almost hear the gears turning.
CASKET MATCH
HEIDENREICH Vs THE UNDERTAKER:
Speaking of Casket Matches that’s what’s next. Whoda thunk it?! I thought this would be a real dump of a match but there were some exciting spots. Midway through the match Snitsky jumps in and attacks The Undertaker and as the two of them were about to beat him, his little brother Kane pops out of the casket at ringside and makes the save. Predictable, but cool! That will set up a tag team match between those 4 for Wrestlemania 21, guaranteed. (At least I'll know when to take a piss during 'mania now- Sammy) Heidenreich made a few futile attempts to put The Undertaker in the casket but the dead man, like a frigid woman, wouldn’t lay down. The end came when Taker delivered the Tombstone piledriver, rolled Heidenreich into the casket and slammed the lid shut.
WINNER: THE UNDERTAKER
Backstage Long finds Guerrero and eventually get Flairs number back to The Nature Boy. Funny stuff as Eddie also took Flairs wallet, ahh stereotypical humor is so funny! Evolution has another spat and another patch up within a minute. Geeze, these guys have more in fighting than the bloody Labor party! Back in the tumbler room Christian picks his number and is interrupted by John Cena. Christian challenges Cena to a battle rap with hilarious results.
WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
KURT ANGLE Vs BIG SHOW Vs JBL:
Another multi man championship match for everyone’s favorite champion JBL and it was stated that it’s been 7 months since he won the belt from Eddie Guerrero, and no one thought it would work but I’m glad it has. Not a bad match but I thought the one on one match from Smackdown last week was better. (JBL vs Angle) Early on Big Show tried to put JBL through the Smackdown table but was put through it himself harder than cheap bourbon goes through me. While Big Show sleeps, Angle hits JBL with a number of german suplex’s. Big Show eventually gets back in but after a near fall all three man are outside the ring as Big Show sends JBL and himself through the ringside barrier real hard. The match ends when Angle brings a chair into the ring but Big Show uses it on him first. As he’s about to get the win, Mark Jindrak pulls him out. With the help of his cabinet, JBL crawls back in, hit’s the Clothesline from Hell on Angle and gets the 1-2-3.
WINNER: AND STILL WWE CHAMPION, JBL
Backstage Bischoff tells Batista that Evolution is banned from ringside during Triple H’s title match. Bischoff asks Batista if either he or Bischoff wants to tell Triple H the news. Batista smiles and says he’ll tell him.
We also see an hilarious promo for Wrestlemania with Eugene pretending to be Forrest Gump. YES!!!!! I laughed my ass off.
WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
RANDY ORTON Vs TRIPLE H:
This was the match of the night with both men pulling out all the stops. Jim Ross mentioned Orton had a bad knee because he had a bit of tape under his knee pad. WTF!!!
How the hell did he spot that? Well Triple H must have noticed it too, cos he went after it early and stayed on it for a while. The match was filled with big hits and near falls by both men, but towards the end of the match Orton had Hunter in the corner and went for a DDT. Triple H slipped out of it and Orton hit the mat hard. Orton looked really dazed but I’m not sure if it was legit or not as Triple H attacked him too hard on a number of occasions for someone with a concussion. Regardless, Orton continued on but just barely. The end came with Triple H hitting a huge clothesline and decking the challenger. Triple H picked him up and hit the Pedigree for the 1-2-3. If Orton’s injury wasn’t legit, he was friggin’ convincing at it.
WINNER: AND STILL HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, TRIPLE H
We next see Nunzio walking but is stopped by Kurt Angle who insists he take Nunzio’s number in the Royal Rumble. I guess Angle is in and Nunzio is out.
Backstage JBL comes in with his cabinet celebrating his big win. Theodore Long, impressed with the lack of outside interference in the last title match, tells JBL that his next title match will be at No Way Out next month against the Big Show in a Barbed Wire Cage Match. Could be interesting, but I think only the top of the cage will have barbed wire on it. The ring will look like a refugee camp.
ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH:
I won’t detail this hardcore, instead I’ll list the entrants and eliminations below and just mention some hi-lights.
1. Daniel Puder getting the crap beaten out of him by Benoit, Guerrero and Hardcore Holly. Jim Ross said something really funny, “Hardcore Holly doesn’t like anybody buy he especially hates rookies” and it showed.
2. Raw guys battling Smackdown guys and vice versa, until Muhammed Hussan enters and gets attacked by everyone. Poor guy didn’t stand a chance. Nothing brings warring Americans together like a loud mouthed Arab.
3. Scotty Too Hotty never making it to the ring as Hussan attacks him in the aisle and slapping on the ever popular Middle Eastern submission hold The Camel Clutch.
4. Shawn Michaels eliminating Kurt Angle and then Angle coming back and eliminating HBK. Then attacking him outside with the steps. The cool thing about this is we’ll get to see Angle Vs Michaels at Wrestlemania 21. I can’t wait.
5. Viscera.
6. Gene Snitsky eliminating Paul London with a nasty looking clothesline which sent him to floor with a 1 ½ pike flip. The judges gave him a 9/10.
7. Vince McMahon injuring his knee trying to look cool. Hilarious!
The end came with Batista and John Cena the only two left in the ring. After a botched ending with both men tumbling out at the same time (Batista clearly hit the floor first). As referees were awarding the match to both men I had horror visions of 1994 and that stupid coin toss as Vince enters (Enters is putting it very kindly- Sammy) and re starts the match. Batista quickly throws Cena out and Batista is going to Wrestlemania.

*The Paul London clothesline bump and Randy Orton's "concussion" were both angles and not real. At this point, WWE plans to use the "concussion" to change Orton's character a bit since everyone feels that Orton's character has suffered over the past few months.
- Many backstage were surprised to see Kurt Angle last such a short time in the Royal Rumble match. WWE likely kept him in for a short period of time due to the fact that he is working with injuries. WWE's goal was to setup a program between him and Shawn Michaels that will end with a match at WrestleMania.
- The mood was very tense backstage at the Royal Rumble last night, escalating when Vince McMahon injured his knee. Talent was already somewhat grumpy due to the upcoming rough travel week that they have. Talent was also doing a lot of comparing the brands, ie pay and morale. Many were wondering about the status of WWE's TV deals as well, due to all the talk over Smackdown potentially being dropped next year and Spike TV changing their focus.
- Most think that Vince McMahon going down to the ring last night during the Rumble was adlibbed since his music never played and the workers weren't informed that he would be coming down. The most likely reason that Vince came down was to speed things up and get the show over since it was running late. PPV companies generally want the shows to end at least 10 minutes before their scheduled finish time.
- Vince McMahon was able to walk to the back under his own power following his injury last night. Once in the back, he was put on a gurney and attended to by medical personnel.*
