Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

Buttonhole's masked terror gives us his take on the show

After reading Sammy's Wrestlemania 21 Match Preview, I decided to write my opinions for the matches on the biggest night (morning here) on the sports entertainment calendar. I won’t worry about writing the history of the matches as Sammy has done all that, & I’m sure you all read them didn’t you? You better have, or I’ll send Richard Wilkins to your houses to bore you to death with his pathetic attempt to entertain you and to prove that he’s under 50.

Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero

Who I think should win: Since Sammy wrote his column, this match has become official. To be honest, I will be happy no matter who wins this match cos i’ve got a gut feeling it’s gonna be huge.

Who I think will win: One word, Rey Mysterio (Hey, you tricked me! That was two words! - Sammy)…This is what I think will happen, Rey will get the pin in an awesome match leaving Eddie to burst a blood vessel and turn on his little buddy and become, once again, one of the top heels in the business.

Undertaker vs. Randy Orton

Who I think should win: The Undertaker. To me his 12-0 record at WrestleMania is one of the better accomplishments of any wrestler ever and to put a blemish on that would only be appropriate if a loss to Randy Orton was going to ruin his gimmick or heel heat / push. As long as he’s not squashed, I honestly can’t see that happening. Don’t kill a great accomplishment just because you want to make Orton a “Legend Killer”. There are other ways to do it. Give him a rematch with The Deadman at Summer Slam or another PPV, that way he still gets a win over Taker and Taker keeps his undefeated record in tact. Anyway since when is spitting in the great Harley Race’s face killing his legend? Or RKO’ing Jake The Snake on RAW killing his legend? It hasn’t. He only wants to beat guys or humiliate them, no matter when or where.

Who I think will win: The Undertaker. Whether it’s the reason above or another, I think he will win. But it will be close. I hope!

Sumo Match- Big Show vs. Akebono

Who I think should win: If it’s fair dinkum, Akebono should win. I learnt a very important lesson when I was younger, “Never play another man’s game”. Big Show is not in his element and unless a miracle happens, shouldn’t be able to topple this mammoth.

Who I think will win: Again if it’s fair dinkum, Akebono will win it. But if Uncle Vince has pulled one of his great magic tricks, Big Show will be a Grand Champion. Well almost. Hey I wonder if they’ll be in full sumo garb! Should be interesting to say the least. Can you all sing “Moon River”?

Women's Championship- Christy vs. Trish

Who I think should win: Trish Stratus isn’t just another pretty face. She is more than worthy to be champion and proves it all the time. Christy Hemme is a fluff wrestler. Nothing more! So this should be a cakewalk for Ms Stratus.

Who I think will win: I hate to say it, but I think Christy Hemme will win it. Maybe that WWF Women’s Champion heading on the top of Christy’s Playboy cover has given something away. I dunno, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels

Who I think should win: This is another match that I just don’t care who wins. I’m just really looking forward to it, cos it has everything any wrestling fan could want. It’s a dream match and in this day and age when everyone wrestles everyone all the time, it’s a rarity. Almost as rare as a sober Irishman! Well almost.

Who I think will win: Don’t ask me why but I think Kurt Angle will win it. I have no reason to back it up; it’s just a gut feeling. Again, it doesn’t matter who wins because it should be a classic.

Money-In-The-Bank 6 man Ladder Match- Christian vs. Edge vs. Chris Benoit vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. Kane vs. Chris Jericho

Who I think should win: I would love to see Christian win it. He’s as good as any of the guys in there but has never had a huge push and I don’t know why.

Who I think will win: Edge will probably walk away with this one seeing as how the storyline has been about him wanting a shot at the Heavyweight title.

WWE Championship- John Cena vs. JBL

Who I think should win: I honestly think JBL should win this one. He has done more for the title’s prestige than anyone in the last 10 years, give or take a year. Longevity means something to me, so when I see someone hold the major title for 10 months or so that says something. You can’t luck a title for that long. If that was true Albert would have been IC champ for a long time. He was huge but was as boring as golf to watch. Plus when a guy gets genuine heat, not because of what he does backstage (ie Triple H) but because of the way he plays his gimmick which in turn pisses the crowd off, that’s talent. What I’m getting at is he still has a lot more to add to the reputation of the title. Giving the belt to Cena maybe the right thing to do, timing wise, but it still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Much like a porn star on a DVD blooper reel!

Who I think will win: Cena will win it, and it pains me to say that. There is something about Cena I don’t like. It must be his gimmick cos his in ring work isn’t too bad. He just rubs me the wrong way.

World Heavyweight Championship- Batista vs. Triple H:

Who I think should win: Triple H. Trust me, I am no Triple H fan, but Batista is way too green. He’s only been in the land of Titan for about 3 years, and you can’t possibly tell me he’s learnt enough in those 3 years to win the title at WrestleMania. I honestly think he’s only over because everyone hates Triple H. If was the Heavyweight champ, he would not draw against anyone else on that roster, because his gimmick requires him to be way too dominant. Who else could stand up to him? You know he’s gonna win against anyone else on RAW, so why would you pay to watch him? He doesn’t sell moves convincingly. I put him between Goldberg and The Ultimate Warrior in terms of selling. He sells better than Goldberg, but not as well as The Warrior. I don’t think he’s ready or good enough.

Who I think will win: Triple H. I honestly don’t think they’ll put the strap on Batista, for whatever reason. Again that’s just my opinion. Plus Triple H hates jobbing, especially at WrestleMania. He made sure he was the first heel to walk out of WrestleMania as champion a few years ago.

There it is. I know a lot of people won’t agree with some or a lot of the things I’ve said, but they’re what I truly believe will, or should, happen. In the end I just hope it’s a memorable show. My gut feeling is it will be better than last years WrestleMania... or maybe that’s just a bad burrito I ate today.

And remember; never trust a midget or anyone with 2 first names.

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
