Yes it is official and has been confirmed by the man himself George Lucas. Star Wars will be coming to a television near you some time after Episode III finishes circulation in theatres.
If that wasn't enough for you, it is also to be made and shot in Sydney's Fox studios. The project won't be overseen by Lucas but he is keen to get back down under and back to work.
"I am looking forward to coming back and working there some more," Lucas told The Daily Telegraph.
"We're going to do a live action show based on minor characters in the 'Star Wars' series."
According to producer Rick McCallum, the series will employ Sydney actors and production crew.
Speculation puts the debut of the series towards the end of 2006, with the setting taking place sometime between the events of Episode III—Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV—A New Hope. By setting the series during this period, it allows the producers to introduce new characters, while opening the door to visits from familiar ones, like Darth Vader, a young Han Solo, Chewbacca and perhaps even Boba Fett.
No definite word yet on who Lucas will select to helm the series creatively.
Of course being a pretty devoted fan myself - this is somewhat of a mixed bag. I'm not sure whether the Star Wars Universe is just too big to fit on the small screen, and will hence be watered down and cheapened. We've seen how cheap TV can be with programs like Battle Star Galactica. 2nd rate CG and cheesy plot lines that tarnish the heritage of the original series. I mean come on Zylons that get it on with humans...Give me something to work with!
Your humble writer had a sneaky suspicion that the Star Wars franchise was just too profitable a beast to be shelved for all eternity. That said, if profits are the real reason for these developments then what hope can we hold out for the TV series staying true to the force....
A New Hope!
