Having been impressed by the Drones when they supported Little Birdy at The Prince Of Wales last year I was really keen to hear the Melbourne bands'
second album.
The first couple of tracks had me inspired by the bands' raw energy and rambunctious noise....but that was enough of it.
'Shark Fin Blues' is the single you may be familiar with. It opens the album and is probably the most catchy and accessible track. That song and their music in general, has a scratchy, sloppy, ranting quality driven by a beat that never really excites. It plods along in a relentless barrage of vitriol and wailing. Maybe that goes down better when you're a bit pissed or perhaps the energy just doesn't translate to c.d. but I am so disappointed.
The vocals of Gareth Liddiard remind me of Mick Jagger, Sir Bob Geldof and Barney From The Simpsons in turn. Mostly he just sounds like an angry drunk.
The lyrics make good reading.."I have been subject to shovel and lime, have studied core samples of the anus bovine". Pity you can't understand what the hell he's saying because there's some good storytelling value there.
Lots of passion and some substantial creativity there, but all those screechy guitars and violins and bashing drums are like nails on a blackboard after a while.
Have a look at the website www.thedrones.com.au for some glowing reviews and a fairly entertaining interview in which Gareth comments that the album title is so long "you can have one end in your mouth and one end up your arse".
