Well another incarnation of our favorite 2d franchise has reared its head, and sorry fans, no many how many beers you have consumed, this will not make it look better in the morning. Despite the waning of the genre there are still a few releases to keep us fans from starving, generally I snap āem all up faster than I pass a chili kebab to porcelain Perry, but this time Iām having a little trouble passing the roughage.
Hereās the deal; we get pure two player fighting action with thirty four characters pulled from the SNK and Capcom library. All your favorites are there, Ken, Ryu, Terry, Guille, Genjyuro, Ryo, Chun Li, Geese, Iori, Mai, and Vega though why they keep putting Dan in these games is baffling (aaarh he blows). Most of their moves and super moves are included, though something feels askew, compared to Capcom vs SNK 2 it just feels wrong. Moves donāt come off every time, even if your skilled at previous versions of the game, it feels slightly sluggish and positively snail paced compared to Streetfighter 3.
 | | The classic dragon punch is an awesome move... | Character balance is way off base, if youāre a decent player and use Akuma or Shin Akuma you damn well win every time and Sagat feels more powerful than most of the characters (I finished it first time with no continues using him). On the other hand, play with another character and by the sixth battle you will be cursing more than Chris Rock as the computer beats you for the fifth time in a row even when youāre using Ryu.
Despite these negative aspects thereās still fun to be had with SNK vs Capcom, playing against friends is always the optimum experience just be sure you establish a home rule that certain characters are banned from play. Like Tekken 3 we used to have a no āEddieā (stupid cheap ass characterā) policy to even out the bouts.
The animations are superb, especially the background environments, featuring lush green forests, run down hobo-like railway yards and gritty sewer tunnels. Character animation is about the same, nothing to rival Guilty Gear XX but hey what does. There are 34 playable characters with all the hidden ones already unlocked (just hold down the right trigger during character selection to reveal them) which is probably a good thing.
 | | Just ask this dude! | Normally I enjoy the task of unlocking new fighters though with this game Iām not sure I would reserve the patience to do so. While some of the hidden fighters are lame and will never be played, others are cool. Dimitri (Darkstalkers) is all good and Violent Ken rocks. All we need is an Ear Biting Bison and Touretteās Syndrome Terry.
Itās hard to recommend SNK vs Capcom, even to the die hard 2d fans, especially when Capcom vs SNK 2 and Streetfighter 3 plays far better and have been out for a few years now. Though PS2 owners may want to consider a deal available at JB HI-FI, for a very reasonable price you can purchase the game with a bonus controller of your choice featuring graphics of either Ken, Ryu, Akuma or Chun Li (there may be others but I havenāt seen them).
