Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA

The Gimmick is here with results for the September PPV, Unforgiven & let me tell you I was out of my seat more than once during the show. (And it had nothing to do with the four bean burrito I had whilst watching it.)

WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH RIC FLAIR Vs CARLITO
The Nature Boy was going for his first IC title in his illustrious career while Carlito was looking to bury a legend. Flair took advantage early and relied heavily on his trade mark reverse knife edges. Until he went for his patented Figure Four Leglock which Carlito countered and kicked Flair to the outside where the champ went to work. He rammed Flair shoulder first into the post then into the steps. Carlito continued to work over Flair's arm and shoulder inside the ring with some close 2 counts in between. Flair got control back and literally chopped his way back on top. He went to the top rope and actually hit Carlito successfully from there which brought the house down. He went up again but like a midget in a peep show, he pulled up too short and Carlito hit him with a mid air dropkick. Carlito went outside to get an apple, came back in and took a bite but was hit with a right hand by Flair causing Carlito to choke. Flair saw the opportunity and slapped on the Figure Four and Carlito had no choice but to tap out.
WINNER: AND NEW WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION – RIC FLAIR

WWE Unforgiven 05 Screenshot 1
He may be old enough to be your Grandpa, but he is still THE MAN! Wooo!
After the match, Flair got on the mic and stated this win was as special as any of his 16 heavy weight title victories. It's good to see someone building that title up to what it should be. Anyway he said he wished his best friend and the greatest wrestler today, Triple H wasn't there to celebrate with him. Even in his winning glory he has to brown nose to Triple H. That pisses me off! He got four hotties from the crowd and went off to celebrate Nature Boy style with them. WOOOOOOOOOO!
Backstage we see Edge and Lita running down Matt Hardy again, only for them to start making out. What other way would you gear up for a cage match?

TORRIE WILSON & VICTORIA Vs ASHLEY & TRISH STRATUS
If this is the state of woman's wrestling these days, then scap it. I love Trish Stratus and Victoria and they're trying so hard to make women's wrestling watchable because they're credible and respectable wrestlers. But how can it be respectable when there is only one challenger for Trish's title and she was pinned in this match? Torrie isn't a wrestler and Ashley is awful. Why flog a dead horse? Stop doing diva challenges and fatten up the division. Anyway, Trish got the win when she hit both Torrie and Victoria in a leg-scissors/headlock take down and then hit Victoria with the chick kick. Last word, fix the division or scrap it!
WINNERS: ASHLEY & TRISH STRATUS

Backstage Ric Flair is about to celebrate with the ladies. He lets them into the limo first and closes the door. Reaches into his trunks and pulls out a bottle of Viagra and takes one. Stops, looks back into the limo, counts the women and takes a few more. Funniest stuff I've seen in along time.

SNITSKY Vs THE BIG SHOW
Hard hitting is what I would call this match. Big Show took advantage early in this one by hitting hard and throwing Snitsky around inside the ring and out. On the second time they went outside, Big Show threw Snitsky into the post and charged, but missed. Snitsky pulled Show into the post and injured his shoulder. Snitsky locked on a top wrist lock but couldn't hold onto it and Snitsky hit a big back suplex on The Big Show but got a 2 count. Again Show tried to fight back but Snitsky applied the top wrist lock working over his shoulder. Big Show then hit a spine buster and both men are down. The Big Show amazingly got up via a nip-up (sloppy but incredible) and hit the Show Stopper for the win.
WINNER: THE BIG SHOW

After the match Big Show hit Snitsky with the bell like he got hit a few weeks ago on RAW. I heard WWE will be using The Big Show like they did with Andre The Giant 25 odd years ago where he will constantly be traveling and will appear on TV sparingly, which is the best way to use him.
Anyway backstage the limo is still in the arena and you can hear Flair WOOOing from inside and steam is billowing out from it. Brilliant!

KERWIN WHITE Vs SHELTON BENJAMIN
I must be the only one, but I am really digging Chavo's new gimmick. Anything that will raise his level of participation on TV is a bonus as long as he can wrestle, and he does. Plus I like his music! This was a pretty good match even as short as it was with Benjamin taking an early advantage, until he missed a splash in the corner resulting White working over Benjamin's knee. Shelton kept trying to fight back but Kerwin kept going back to the knee. Benjamin tried to go up top but was cut off and hit with a big superplex then locked in a half crab. The end came when Benjamin rolled through the crab and then catapulted White into the top turnbuckle. Kerwin grabbed his golf club from the corner and went to nail Benjamin, but Benjamin caught him in the T-Bone Suplex for the 1 2 3. WINNER: SHELTON BENJAMIN

Backstage Matt Hardy has an interview about Edge and Lita which means we're ready for the Cage Match.

CAGE MATCH- EDGE W/LITA Vs MATT HARDY
The best match of the night and both men I guarantee would've been sore the next day. This will be hard for me to describe without boring you as it went for roughly 20 minutes so if you haven't seen the match do it! I can't do this justice, because it was one of the best Cage Matches I've seen in a while. In any case, most of the match was Edge trying to do what he did to Hardy at SummerSlam one month earlier, hitting two power bombs, one into the cage wall and another into the turnbuckles. Then to top it off Edge hit another one whilst Matt was perched on the top rope. After numerous 2 counts and near escapes Hardy came back and tied Edge into the ropes and wailed on him then rammed him several times into the cage which busted Edge open. Hardy kicked the blood out of him literally and grabbed the briefcase (which Lita had thrown in earlier) and climbed the ropes. Edge pushed the ref into the ropes and knocked Hardy down allowing Edge to hit a big time Spear on him into the cage wall. They both climbed the cage and Hardy hit a huge Side Effect from the top rope and covered him, only for Lita to come in and break up the count. Hardy hit Lita with a vicious Twist Of Fate, but was hit himself with another Spear. Edge went for an unsuccessful cover then ascended the cage but Hardy rammed Edge's head into the cage causing him to fall backwards. Hardy went up and then from the top of the cage hit a massive Leg Drop (you have to see it) and got the 3 count.
WINNER: MATT HARDY

Backstage John Cena is getting his Ankle strapped when Eric Bischoff comes in and bad mouths the champ. Back to the arena Edge is crawling up the ramp bloodied and in a considerable amount of pain.

WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
LANCE CADE & TREVOR MURDOCH Vs HURRICANE & ROSEY

I'm a big fan of this new team, especially Murdoch and I hate The Hurricane. This was an ok match with the champs having most of the control until about midway through Murdoch went down and asked Lillian Garcia for a kiss. When she refused he got grabby and The Hurricane came to the rescue, but unlike a real superhero he failed. He chased Murdoch away initially but rolled in the ring and Murdoch caught him. He hit a hard DDT onto the floor while The Hurricane was draped on the apron. The greenest superhero since me on Grand Final weekend (that's another story) hit the concrete hard and looks in serious trouble. It's now a handicap match and Rosey took control early but the challengers moved in and hit a couple of good moves. As Rosey got control back The Hurricane staggered back and tagged himself in only to get hit moments later with a big Murdoch Lariat/Legsweep combo for the win.
WINNERS: AND NEW WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS – LANCE CADE & TREVOR MURDOCH

Backstage we see the Limo again and one of the ladies comes out wearing Flairs robe. Flair calls her back in and she says she needs to get her breath back. She flashes Flair and he starts WOOOOing again. Funny stuff!

WWE Unforgiven 05 Screenshot 2
Bam! Right in the kisser.
CHRIS MASTERS Vs SHAWN MICHAELS
I was looking forward to this match and it proved to be a winner. The Masterpiece is underrated and he held his own in this one proving he could be the next big thing. He attacked Shawn before the bell with The Master Lock. The bell finally sounded and Masters went for it again only for Shawn to slide out of it and send him to the floor and hit a Plancha. Masters, soon after, hit a big power bomb twice on HBK into the ring post and threw him back in to work on his back. Masters wrestled a smart match working over Shawn's back at every opportunity and getting some very close falls. Every time HBK mounted an offense Masters came back and almost scored the win with a Torture Rack. HBK eventually gained an offense and his trade mark flying forearm, flying elbow into a Sweet Chin Music but Master ducked and locked in The Master Lock. Michaels tried to break it but to no avail, until he flipped over the top to the apron and hit a Hot Shot. Michaels climbed the top rope and went for a flying body press but got caught and Masters went for The Master Lock again. But Michaels slipped out and hit Sweet Chin Music out of nowhere for the win. In my opinion, Michaels was lucky to win that one and Masters walked away a better man than before he entered.
WINNER: SHAWN MICHAELS

Backstage we see the limo again and the women all pile out messy and looking tired. Flair emerges soon after with his pants half down and looking exhausted, but happy. He takes a swig from his bottle of champagne and collapses in classic Nature Boy style. The old Ric Flair is back. I love it! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

By the power of Greyskull...I have the powerrr!
WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
KURT ANGLE Vs JOHN CENA

I find this really funny that when Cena first came in he was pushed as having this amateur wrestling background but is now billed as a street fighter. Well I guess if a Mexican can pass himself off as a white guy and JET can pass themselves off as being talented musicians then who cares. Anyway this was a great match with Cena frustrating Angle early till he slowed things down and took control with a reverse chin lock, leg scissors and some German suplexes. Cena fought out and tried to hit the FU on two separate occasions only for Angle to hit the Angle Slam for a close 2 count. Cena escaped the Ankle Lock and hit the 5 Knuckle Shuffle but his ankle is bothering him. Angle accidentally hit the ref in the corner as Cena hit the FU but no ref to count. The champ went to revive the ref as Angle kicked Cena low then hit him with his gold medal brass knucks style. Angle dropped a knee on Cena's ankle and slapped on the Ankle Lock as Eric Bischoff made his way into the ring. He got in Cena's face, but Cena eventually rolled out of the move and sent Angle into Bischoff. Cena grabbed the belt and clocked Angle with it causing a disqualification.
WINNER: BY DISQUALIFICATION – KURT ANGLE. BUT STILL WWE CHAMPION – JOHN CENA
After the match Cena hit Bischoff with the FU but Angle attacked him from behind and went to Angle Slam him through the table. But Cena reversed it and FU'ed Angle through it instead.

And remember; never trust a midget or anyone with 2 first names.

Great show I thought, with the cage match the easy highlight. I have to go now, I think I've been mentioned in the Latham Diaries and I need to clear that up.

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
