Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

Chelsea 04 dvd box Chelsea 2004-05 Season Review. DVD

Ichibod hates this team, but at least he follows the game.

"Chelsea football club were formed and entered the league in 1905. Their early years were uneventful and it wasn't until 1955 when they won their first honour, the league title. This double DVD is set over two parts and tells the story of Chelsea's sensational season."

When this DVD came my way (which was no surprise as no one else on the Buttonhole staff really has any idea of what "soccer" is all about, apart from what they saw in the Simpsons- "forward to centre who holllllllds it holllllldddds it holllllllddddddddddds it") I kind of cringed at the mere mention of my second most hated team in the world (apart from every team that beats England).

Though with my great knowledge of the actual game of football (pronounced SOCCER in Australia) and the fact that I got to watch Chelsea beat Manchester United (my first most hated team), along with the fact I'm probably the only English man on the buttonhole staff, I thought I'd give this the proper attention it deserves. So I'll try not to be too judgemental or dwell on the fact that if you have several billion dollars lying around in the kitchen draw and under the bed, you too can own a premiership winning team!

Chelsea 04 dvd screen 1
Yeah, yeah, no need to brag about it.
First thing I have to say about this DVD is wow. If you want value for money then this little product offers up over three hours of viewing. Starting off it has a comprehensive review of the 2004-2005 premiership campaign, with a decent wrap up of every league game played.

Of course you only get to see the moments that make Chelsea look the ever deserving champions, but nonetheless it was interesting to see my team get thrashed by Chelsea twice. Although, like I said, I did get to see Chelsea beat Manchester United which did kind of made up for my team's pathetic performance. Albeit John Terry and Frank Lampard probably do get paid more per week than my whole entire team's yearly salary.

Enough of my morose ramblings and back to the actual DVD. Included among the league wrap up are several short interviews with Chelsea players and staff which adds a nice dimension to the whole DVD. It certainly felt like it made the whole thing a little more real. If you actually get to see this DVD you will realise that these are just guys playing football. The inclusion of a few snippets of Jose Mourinhos' press conferences are a great touch. Here I was thinking Jose was about as funny as Vinne Jones' testical grab on Paul Gascoigne (look it up on the internet kiddies its well worth a look and probably the only thing Chelsea was famous for in the last 50 years) but I was wrong. Jose's snippets show that even under the great pressure he is under he is still able to outfox the media and well put a smile on yah face.

An absolute Gem on the DVD is minute 20.42 on disk one. Whoever said Chelsea fans were not passionate about their team has obviously not seen this DVD. After a dubious Referee's decision, Drogba moves to the referee to get his yellow card. A young lad around 10 years of age, sitting close to the referee lets him know just how he feels about the decision verbally (ohh how I wish we could hear his dulcet tones) and gives him a two fingered salute before turning his back in disgust. Magic!

The second part of the DVD, or what's considered extra features, contains a full wrap up of Chelsea's various cup campaigns. This includes a review of Chelsea's exit from the Champions league and Fa cup and their first taste of victory and silverware from their win in the Carling Cup.

Interviews with Jose Mourhino, Frank Lampard and John Terry are also enjoyable watching, if a little long. I found the interviews did not really cover anything that hadn't already been covered during the course of the DVD. Although, as I mentioned earlier, these little bits really help keep it all a bit grounded in the reality stakes.

Chelsea 04 dvd screen 2
Blue...its a colour so cruel.
A short doco style film on Chelsea's victory parade through the streets of Chelsea on one of those open top buses is one for the fans.

The only redeeming feature of this little part is the absolute twits who manage to get on camera. You know the ones that look like they just crawled out of some prehistoric tar pit and haven't quite yet mastered the use of the English language? Well they are there.

All in all this entire DVD is definitely value for money. Of course it is really intended for Chelsea fans, but I found enough to keep even me interested for the full DVD. Its one sided and all about the blue boys but hey it is their DVD, so they can do whatever the hell they want with it!

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
