Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

Crazy White Boys DVD Double DVD Review- Crazy White Boys & Decade of Destruction

Fazz gets a double dose of dudes doing dumb things

Crazy White Boys:

The DVD opens with the following important disclaimer: "Warning: The shit in this video has been performed and supervised by Crazy White Boys. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. If you do, and get fucked up, it's on you asshole. We're not responsible for your bullshit antics." What follows is fifty minutes of needless pranks, and a few moments of hilarity thrown into the mix.

The opening stunt involves a bunch of motorcycles tearing down a California freeway, when one of the riders stands on the tank of his bike with a bus right behind him. The police proceed to pull him over. For every one of these skits, you get three on the level of the drunken frat-boy on spring break unknowingly quaffing pints of urine. The authorities arrive again after the boys obtain a used car and proceed to destroy the thing, all for the cameras. Another disclaimer reads "Non-professional driver on an open course."

The DVD is at its worst when it was at its most repulsive. Vomiting, fights, a night vision video of a mousetrap in action, a guy biting the heads off of live fish, all were not only disgusting, but a little dull to anyone who has been jaded by shockumentaries and reality TV. Scott Lane does a boring stint about how to get freebies from McDonald's. The guys demolish the interior of a house with motorbikes. Man lights genitalia on fire... again… More and more puking. There is a drive-by paintball shooting, which is going to be uber un-funny some day when a victim pulls a tech-9 and blows some of these pranksters away. The most distasteful segment might be a bunch of booze-hounds commenting on terrorists.

However, once in a great while something funny or entertaining might happen. The boys take off bum fighting by giving the participants actual martial arts skills. There is a pornographic segment involving what look like Barbie and Ken dolls. Two women foxy-box topless. Lane goes to meet his hero, Jackass' Steve-o, by grappling him onstage during a live show. Steve-o is none-too-impressed, which makes Scott, and me, laugh heartily. The boys booby-trap a bicycle, then dump it in Newport Beach and videotape it. No one steals it, so they run it on down to Compton and find a victim, a poor, misled youth who decides to steak the bike and pays the price. Another piece of footage captures a world-record setting cross country mono.
For all its wackiness and zaniness, Crazy White Boys seems to me to be another of those Jackass Spin-off deals we've come to expect in recent years. It has none of the originality and humor of the early CKY releases, but retains all the poor production values. If you're into mindless pranks, go get this now, but be warned, some of the pranks, as on Steve-o's DVD are random acts of violence on innocent bystanders… so beware.

Decade of Destruction DVD
Decade of Destruction:
The demented minds of XYZ have been hard at work creating the most destructive video known to man, WELCOME TO THE UNHOLY WORLD KNOWN AS DECADE OF DESTRUCTION.
The Blurb claims some big things, but can it deliver? Firstly, we know these guys didn't start it, the likes of the Crusty Demons and Bam and the CKY boys did. So let's just forget all of that for a minute shall we?
The DVD's menu starts off with some blisteringly huge metal tunes… already I'm interested. Upon starting the show, the disclaimer is already to be taken more seriously than the last one I saw.

After a slightly disturbing opening montage of scenes of war, violence and destruction, all set to hardcore death metal music, the main feature moves on straight into what we all like to see but hate to admit it… People skateboarding and getting really hurt. Next up we have the launch party for Slayer's "you hate us all"., on September 11th, 2001, a date we shall all remember. For no reason we move into a scene of some guy talking about getting shot in the arm and showing off his injuries. More skating, more trouble with the authorities… you begin to get the picture.

As we go on we see more wanton acts of self-harm, stupidity, nudity, skateboarding, and general bad behavior set to modern metal music. All in all this caries on for the next hour and a bit. If you're from a skateboarding background like Mugwai and myself, then some of the footage on this DVD is absolutely amazing, with some stunts and tricks many of us only ever dream of. The rest of the time is taken up by more acts of vandalism, alcoholism, and all sort of degenerate activities.

I was a bit more impressed with this DVD. The soundtrack boasts some heavy hitters in the metal field, and on a whole, the DVD was produced to a much finer standard. Good production, good stunts, well, planned out. It just goes to show that a little money and experience can take you a long way.

On a whole I wasn't disappointed with either DVD. "Crazy White Boys" is exactly what it claims, and nothing more. XYZ have gone the extra mile with "Decade of Destruction" though, so it's a stand-up performer in my books.

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
