Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

JOE LOUIS ARENA: DETROIT, MI

BEST OF SEVEN FOR THE UNITED STATES TITLE
MATCH #1
BOOKER T W/SHARMELL Vs CHRIS BENOIT

This whole thing really doesn't sit well with me. Forget the fact that it doesn't get interesting until the 7th match, and let's face it, it's going to end up 3 all, but why they would re hash an angle between the same two guys from 5 or 6 years ago is beyond me. Don't get me wrong the match itself was great but the concept is too dated. We know all about it, so why do it again with the same guys. Anyway as I just said great match, but these guys know how to work well with each other and Benoit can go with anyone. The question seemed to be whether Sharmell would get involved or not on behalf of her husband. That would be answered soon but the contest moved back and forth until about the 10 minute mark, when Benoit went up top and Sharmell fulfilled the prophecy and distracted Benoit allowing Booker the head him off, but to no avail. Benoit knocked him down and went for the diving headbutt but missed. Booker hooked him in an Oklahoma Roll, used the ropes for leverage and got the 3 count. Sharmell held onto his feet just to make sure.
WINNER: BOOKER T

Backstage Bischoff is warming up for his match with Theodore Long as the boss walks up to wish him well. Bischoff rants on about how he will complete 3 things tonight among them being Kurt Angle becoming the new WWE champion and screwing Cena like McMahon screwed Bret Hart in 97 at that Survivor Series. John Cena heard this and made mention that Bischoff likes screwing men. Bischoff walked and Vince and Cena were alone and Vince started talking hood and said
Keep it up Nigga". As he walked away Booker T and Sharmell overheard him and Booker said "Tell me he didn't say that!?" Funny stuff!

INTERPROMOTIONAL WOMAN'S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
MELINA W/ MERCURY & NITRO Vs TRISH STRATUS W/ MICKIE JAMES

Tazz and Joey Styles are doing the commentary for this one and Tazz is at his surly best. Not a bad match at all considering Melina hasn't much in ring experience before. No not that kind, get you minds out of the gutter. Jeez! Melina actually had most of the control in this one besides Trish leaping from the top and taking out all 3 members of MNM on the outside early on. Mid way through, Melina turned her attention to Mickie James on the outside allowing Mercury & Nitro to go for the Snap Shot. The ref saw it before it could happen and ejected them fro ringside. From there Melina reversed or blocked most of Trish's moves until she went for a shoulder block while Trish was on apron. Mickie moved Trish out of the way and she eventually hit a modified Stratusfaction from the top rope.
WINNER: AND STILL WWE WOMAN'S CHAMPION, TRISH STRATUS

LAST MAN STANDING MATCH
TRIPLE H Vs RIC FLAIR

Easily the match of the night, but my brother said something to me that he has noticed, and that is that Ric Flair doesn't move anywhere near as good as he used to so he bleeds a lot to compensate. In other words when you see him bleed you think you've seen a great match but you may have only seen an ok match. This illusion may be true for this match. I don't know I'll have to watch it again, but certainly in his defence he's no where near as banged up as Hogan and bumps better but his moves are stale and not as varied. Triple H did a really good job putting over Ric in this one. Judge for yourself and let me know. Anyway it was a brutal contest as you might think it would be, with it spilling into the crowd early. Triple H took over from there back in the ring until Flair was back outside and was rammed head first into the ring post. Triple H went under the ring, found a screw driver and jammed it into Flair's head causing Flair to bleed heavily and proving that Triple H is like Tommy Lee, good with his tool. Back in the ring and Flair came back some what but with no significance until Triple H set him up on the table for a Pedigree but Flair back dropped him through the Spanish announce table and Triple H banging the back of his head on the way down. Unbelievable stuff! From there the close counts to 10 went back and forth with Flair give Triple H a cheap vasectomy by ramming him groin first into the post repeatedly and Triple H viciously smashing the steel steps into Flair's head. The end came when Flair on the offence ducked his head looking for a back body drop but instead got hit with a Pedigree. Flair was able to beat the count of 10 but was met with a second Pedigree. Amazingly Flair made it to his feet again but again Helmsley hit him with a third Pedigree. Flair somehow beat the count again but this time Triple H was waiting for him and slammed a sledge hammer into his back and that was it.
WINNER: TRIPLE H

After the match Triple H stood over Flair and motioned the end of his career by "pulling the trigger" on the Nature Boy.

After all that, back in the ring everyone's favorite couple hit the ring. Edge started talking about his new show on RAW "The Cutting Edge". Wow that's original! He then ripped on Dmitri Young who was at ringside. He's a Baseball player for the Detroit Tigers and hilariously at one stage Edge called him Mark Henry. Funny as hell! Basic heal heat by Edge to the hometown hero. Nothing much to speak of here, but why did it take a paragraph to mention nothing happened during this segment? I'll work out later on why I'm a procrastinator.

I haven't seen a forearm like that since Popeye clocked me in the eye for stealing his spinach.
WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
KURT ANGLE W/ SPECIAL REFEREE: DAIVARI Vs JOHN CENA

In this match Daivari proved he is the best referee since Danny Davis, who was a referee from the late 80's. It was basically a handicapped match with Daivari aiding Angle and scolding Cena. Angle locked on the Ankle Lock early after Daivari wouldn't pin Kurt's shoulders to the mat and Cena went after him. Cena made the ropes but Daivari kicked his hands away. He eventually escaped the move and slapped Daivari which caused him to call for the bell. Angle stopped him in time but that allowed Cena to rush them both and knock them to the floor knocking Daivari out. Another referee came in but before too long he was taken out by a Kurt Angle clothesline. By this stage the crowd was split down the middle with a bit of an advantage going to Kurt. Angle hit Cena with the Angle Slam as another ref came down but he only got a 2 count. Soon after another failed pin attempt Angle clobbered that referee and went to get Daivari back who had been laid out the whole time. As he did Charles Robinson mad his way down the aisle and Kurt tried to stop him from entering as Cena then DDT'd Daivari and he's out again. Three referee's were laid out in the ring as Angle made his way back. Then out of nowhere he was hit with the FU and covered for the 3 count.
WINNER: AND STILL WWE CHAMPION – JOHN CENA

GENERAL MANAGERS MATCH
ERICH BISCHOFF Vs THEODORE LONG W/ PALMER CANON

Just what you'd expect from this one, not much action and a lot of time wasting which pissed me off cos that could've been added to the main event. Bischoff basically went after Teddy's throat through out this one. Palmer Canon kept climbing up on the apron but that did nothing but distract Teddy Long. After Bischoff dropped Longfor the second or third time, the music of Wrestlecrap's favorite wrestler began: The Boogeyman. Bischoff told the referees to guard him from the outside of the ring allowing The Boogeyman to come in from behind. He hit Bischoff with a Pump Handle Slam allowing Teddy Long to make the cover and the win as The Boogeyman left the ring through the crowd.
WINNER: THEODORE LONG

SURVIVOR SERIES ELIMINATION MATCH
CAPTAIN: BATISTA, JBL, REY MISTERIO, BOBBY LASHLEY & RANDY ORTON
Vs CAPTAIN: SHAWN MICHAELS, CARLITO, CHRIS MASTERS, BIG SHOW & KANE

I was pumped for this match cos I love these elimination matches. I grew up on them and to not see them anymore is a real shame. By the way all five announcers were calling this one and, in my opinion, Tazz won the surly award from yours truly after this match. As Krusty the Clown would say, "Angry. Angry young man." Lashley made the first big impact when he manhandled HBK, Masters & Carlito early. He had Michaels in the Dominator but unfortunately walked too close to Kane on the outside, and got hit with a chokeslam by the Big Red Machine. Shawn covered him and Bobby Lashley became victim #1. It's now 4 on 5 in favor of RAW. Mysterio quickly came in and worked over HBK but Mysterio was dominated buy both Masters and then Kane. Rey eventually made the tag to an injured Batista who went to work on Kane. HBK, Masters, Carlito & Big Show all felt the fury of Batista. While Show was being dealt with by Batista, Rey hit Kane with a 619 and then the champ hit him with a Spine Buster. 1, 2, 3 and Kane is eliminated. It's now 4 on 4. Kane got up and both he and Big Show hit Batista with a Double Choke Slam and just like that the champ is gone. RAW is in front again with a 4 to 3 lead. JBL came in and worked over Big Show but got caught and slammed. Orton and Rey both tried to stop him but to no avail until Orton hit Show with a Hot Shot and as he spun around JBL hit the Clothesline From Hell. Rey tagged in and hit the 619 as did Orton who hit the RKO. JBL hit the Clothesline again but Big Show kept moving, so Rey came in and hit him with a Seated Senton and David just pinned Goliath.

WWE Surviror Series 05 screenshot 2
This pic has nothing to do with this match, I just find the Boogeyman funny. He loves the night life.
It's now 3 on 3 as all 6 men go at it in a pier six brawl. Masters and Mysterio end up being the legal men and they go at it until The Masterpiece tags in Carlito works over Rey. Carlito Irish Whips Rey and he makes the blind tag to JBL and as Carlito goes for an Overdrive JBL hits him with the Clothesline From Hell and Carlito is gone. Smackdown gains the upper hand with a 3 to 2 lead. Rey tags back in and he takes control over Masters and when he missed a shoulder thrust in the corner on Rey, Rey hit the 619 and Drpped the Dime for the 3 count. It's now 3 on 1 in favor of Smackdown. HBK is the only one left and he's been down and out of it since the pier six brawl earlier when JBL hit him with a Fall Away Slam on the outside. JBL threw him back in and Rey soon after hit the 619 and went for the West Coast Pop but Shawn countered it with Sweet Chin Music and Rey is gone.

It's reduced to 2 on 1, but just as soon as we say that, JBL goes for the Clothesline From Hell and HBK ducks under and Super Kicks JBL and eliminates him. It's Shawn Michaels one on one with a fresh Randy Orton now. Shawn fought back and looked as though he had it won with Orton being set up for the Chin Music, but JBL was still at ringside and went to hit HBK with a chair and got super kicked allowing Orton to hit the RKO on Michaels and get the win for Smackdown.
WINNERS: TEAM SMACKDOWN

After the match the Smackdown locker room emptied out and they hoisted Orton onto their shoulders as the lights went down and that familiar gong sounded. The Druids came out carrying a casket as Orton looked on in shock. That look turned to horror as a lightning bolt hit the casket catching it alight and busting out of it was The Undertaker who stormed the ring and cleaned house. Orton left as The Undertaker posed in the ring as the PPV finished.

It was interesting to see the crowd now starting to split with Cena. It won't be too long till we see Cena turn into The Rock with the crowd turning their backs on him completely. That's my prediction.

I thought this was an awesome show with an unbelievable ending not seen since In Your House: Buried Alive from 1996. Watch it if you can get a copy of it (on DVD published by Shock- Sammy, in shill mode), you'll love it.

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
