"Super Dual Box Pro". The words straight from the outer shell of the adapter itself. I could not - even on my best day - invent such a wonderfully ridiculous name for a product. I like the "Super Dual Box Pro" USB controller adapter. I like it a whole lot. If I were not already planning to marry Claire Danes then I might have married the "Super Dual Box Pro" instead. Wait, did I say that out loud? Let's not mention this to anyone, okay?
Being a gamer of many seasons I like to taste games of different eras and so I must admit my mouth will use that dirty word "emulator" in my review of this product.
The USB adapter I used is a 3rd party Playstation controller adapter for the PC. One end has a USB cable connection, the other a space to plug in a Playstation / PS2 controller. So you need your own controllers for this thing – it does not come with one.
Now, while it is fine and dandy to play some PC games with this adapter using a PS1 or PS2 Dual Shock Analogue Controller - I think most people that are interested in this product would find it more useful for emulators.
Most modern PC games have either keyboard / mouse combo support or else specific controllers / joysticks that would suit the individual game. (If you can afford them - Sammy)
So without further ado, let me tell you a tale. A tale of two cities. Of mice and men and super-robot-monkey-zombies. But most of all a tale of how this wily reviewer received a tasty little product courtesy of my good friends at Buttonhole.com.au who received it from their good friends at www.realgamer.com.au. (Hey, our friends are your friends, Ninja. We're all family here at Buttonhole!- Sammy)
 | | If you send it, we will shill | Before I go any further, I just want to pimp Realgamer.com.au some more, because last year I bought FFIX and Chrono Cross from their site for my PS1. This was before I was involved with Buttonhole.com.au. Considering how rare those games are, and how god damn brilliant they both are, I thank my lucky stars that I was able to purchase those two gems for a measly $40 Australian each.
When I received this magical USB package in the mail, I unwrapped it, hugged it a little, gave it a bath then pulled out the software driver disk and fired up the home PC. Soon the installation was complete and I was on my way, but alas - I did not get to use the thing on the first day. Why? Well I had some trouble trying to find any GUI or interface to interact with after installation. I checked the PC control panel and sure enough the drivers were installed. I tried some PC games, but they did not have any joystick / controller support. So, after some exchange of hot steamy email between Sammy, and myself I asked him to lay off the office romance and just tell me if he got his USB controller adapter up and running and how did he do it? He had got it working and I was jealous. I was left staring at the PC screen in frustration, cursing the foul beast once again for bedevilling me in my gaming endeavours.
Fortunately, the following day I got some email from Sammy - tried a few tricks... then, all Thunderbirds were go after that! My mouth watered at how I might test this magical black box. Why, what better than a game of old school Street Fighter? If there were any problems I would soon know, as this game requires precision timing and lightning fast reflexes don't you know.
So here's what I did. I played Street Fighter on my PS2 with my PS2 controller. Then I loaded up the exact same game on a SNES emulator on the PC. I attached the USB adapter and then used my PS2 controller that I had configured for the emulator earlier in the day. Frankly, I was a little sceptical how it would work. And would it give me the same control and precision as a console game?
The good news is: no lag time [as Sammy also mentioned in his review], accurate responsive control, no noticeable difference at all going from the PS2 Street fighter to the PC / SNES Emulated Street fighter using the same controller for both. I had to call my brother over right away to show him how good it was. All the while saying repeatedly to myself "This is so damn cool, This is soooo damn cool."
 | | There is nobody better to help you test a controller than Mazza! | I also tested out another little game called "Super Mario World" with the PS2 controller / USB adapter. I have Super Mario World on my GBA SP and used to own the SNES version as well so it was a very deliberate pick. SMW again has VERY precise controls, if there were any issues with the USB adapter I would know right away.
It was perfect. In fact, better than perfect, I could not have hoped for better control and it was no better / worse than playing an actual SNES unit with the old featherweight champion controller. God bless that old SNES controller, one of my favourite controllers of all time. Of all time!
So, would I recommend this product to you for your gaming needs? Indeed I would. Sammy already opened the can of worms that is emulation and if we both go to prison then I'll be taking my Gameboy SP and a pack of cigarettes to trade for other Gameboy games. Before I take my cup of execution poison I will raise my finger in the air like Socrates and yell "Games are about gameplay not fancy graphics, curse you all!"
If you plan on playing yesterdays games with the controllers of today [remember, the USB adapter is available in different flavours so check out Sammy's review] or modern PC games that support joysticks / controllers then a
Realgamer USB controller adapter is the product you need. Happy gaming.
