Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

THE FIRST MARINER ARENA - BALTIMORE, MA

The last stop to Wrestlemania is No Way Out, and what an interesting stop it was.

WWE CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
KID KASH Vs PSICOSIS Vs SUPER CRAZY Vs NUNZIO Vs FUNAKI Vs SCOTTY 2 HOTTY Vs BRIAN KENDRICK Vs PAUL LONDON Vs GREGORY HELMS

If you were expecting a slow moving match with lots of rest holds, then you're like a channel 10 viewer; watching the wrong show! This was spot wrestling at it's best, or worst, depending what your tastes are like. Each guy made sure they got their spots in and Helms copped most of them. We saw Planchas, Moonsaults, Senton Bombs and even a Worm, but the end came after Kash hit the Dead Level on Psichosis for the 3, but Crazy broke it up with a Moonsault. Helms rolled into it and stole the win with the 3 count.
WINNER: AND STILL WWE CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPION - GREGORY HELMS

Backstage Booker T and Sharmell are arguing with Theodore Long about the title match against Chris Benoit. Booker says he's not 100% but Theodore says he either fights or forfeits the title. Booker is hilarious on the stick and I hope they let him talk as often as possible. On another side of the arena Kristal is about to conduct an interview when Finlay enters and wants a fight. So since no one is willing to fight him, he does the only logical thing and looks to fight Kristal. He carries her to the ring and is about to whale on her like a drunken redneck (you mean Steve Austin?: Sammy) when Bobby Lashley's music hits and he makes the save. JBL enters the frey and we have our next match.

Finlay proves to Lashley that not all white guys have small Shillelaghs
BOBBY LASHLEY Vs JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD W/ JILLIAN HALL
With Finlay gone, the match starts and it is a hard hitting affair. For me the jury is still out on Lashley, but they are pushing him correctly; slowly. Lashley took control early but the experience of JBL got it back and he stayed on him. Finally however, Lashley fought back with a huge series of clotheslines and over head belly to belly suplexes, which busted JBL open above the eye. Lashley went for the Dominator but JBL slipped out and went for the Clothesline from Hell, but he missed and was hit with a T-Bone Suplex. Finlay came back and threw the ring announcer into the ring, and with the ref not looking, he nailed Lashley with his Shillelagh. Bradshaw hit the Clothesline and got the 3 count, and Lashley's undefeated streak is over.
WINNER: JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD

Back in the ring and, the music of Batista hits and the former champ is making a surprised return. He says he wants his title back sooner rather than later. Patience big man, don't rush it. Backstage, Kurt is getting ready when Randy Orton enters and mouths off about him going to Wrestlemania but Kurt is unwavering with his focus towards The Undertaker.

NON TITLE TAG TEAM MATCH
MNM Vs MATT HARDY & A MYSTERY PARTNER

There were a lot of rumors about who Matt's partner was going to be; from Animal, to his brother Jeff (YUCK!) but it turned out to be Tatanka. I don't know why either, but it was actually OK. Sadly though, the crowd obviously forgot who he was, because he got the worst reaction possible; no reaction. As I said, this was a pretty good match as Tatanka and Hardy showed some good continuity early and took it to the champs, but they came back and worked over Tatanka with some great continuity of their own. Eventually though Tatanka fought back and tagged in Hardy, who took back control, and when Tatanka hit the Samoan Drop on Nitro that was it. Being a non title match though, no new champs.
WINNERS: MATT HARDY & TATANKA

WWE UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
CHRIS BENOIT Vs BOOKER T W/ SHARMELL

Before the match Benoit and Booker T were in the ring and Booker said, due to Theodore Long's ultimatum earlier in the show, there was not going to be a title match and he called Theodore Long out to ringside. He publicly forfeited the title and walked out of the ring but Benoit tried to taunt him back by calling him a coward and said he doesn't want to win it that way. Sharmell began slapping Benoit and saying it was all Benoit's fault as Booker came up from behind and attacked Benoit to start the match. This was a pretty good match with a lot of near falls and hard hits from both men but eventually it ended when Booker went for a roll up in the corner, Benoit rolled through and tried to apply the Sharpshooter. Sharmell got up on the apron but was knocked down when Booker kicked Benoit off. Benoit applied the Sharpshooter but quickly jumped out of it and slapped on the Crippler Crossface and Booker had to tap.
WINNER: AND NEW WWE U.S. CHAMPION - CHRIS BENOIT

Backstage, Benoit is greeted by Rey Mysterio and other Smackdown superstars until he gets to Chavo Guerrero and Vickie Guerrero. He hugs them both and Rey says he is going to do this for Eddie, as he heads to the ring.

NUMBER ONE CONTENDERS MATCH
RANDY ORTON Vs REY MYSTERIO

After everything Orton said over the last few weeks of Smackdown, I was hoping for #1 Rey to kick Ortons ass, and #2 this to be a match to remember. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see either. Don't get me wrong, it was a good match, but it was missing something, especially after all the hype surrounding it. However, Orton took control early and grabbed a huge advantage when Rey tried for a running senton, but got caught and Randy swung Rey into the post like a bat. From there Randy worked over Rey's arm visciously and although Rey made a few comebacks, Orton always went back to the injury. Rey finally hit back with a big Sunset Flip into a Powerbomb from the middle rope, danced around like Eddie Guerrero and that seemed to spark him. He hit a Seated Senton and an inverted DDT, but was stopped by a dropkick in mid-air. As Randy was waiting to hit the RKO, he was hit with a dropkick and was set up for the 619. As Rey went for it, Orton ducked and rolled him up, grabbed the ropes and got the 3 count and a spot in the main event at Wrestlemania.
WINNER: RANDY ORTON

Rey looks devastated as Orton gloats. Rey finally makes his way backstage and is greeted by Chavo and Vickie Guerrero. Rey apologises, but they both tell him he has nothing to apologise for. Rey walks off completely dejected.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
THE UNDERTAKER Vs KURT ANGLE

What a match! If this was all I was getting on this PPV then I would've been happy. Kurt showed in this why he is the best in the world, and The Undertaker showed he is still a force in the ring. What can I say about this, except there was a lot of mat wrestling and a lot of hard hitting shots by both legends. Both men looked to have the other beaten numerous times but they always seemed to come back and switch control.

WWE No Way Out 06 screenshot 2
Holy flying zombie wrestlers Batman!
Eventually after about 30 minutes of reversals, near falls by both and The Angle Slam by the champ through a table, The Undertaker went for the Tombstone only for Angle to reverse it and go for one of his own. The Dead man reversed it again only for Angle to slip out and apply the Ankle Lock for a fourth time on Taker before he broke out again. Angle hit the Angle Slam for a second time and went for the cover, but Taker hooked on the Triangle Choke for a third time and tried to take out the champ. Just as it seemed Kurt was gone, he rolled through it and somehow synched The Undertaker in a roll up for the 3 count.
WINNER: AND STILL WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP - KURT ANGLE

I cannot do main event justice by either describing it or talking it up, if you haven't seen it: do it! It is the early candidate for match of the year and it saved the PPV. Wrestlemania here we come!

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
