Armageddon; the end of the world. Well not quite the end of the world really - as every representation of the fall of civilization is different, sometimes I think I would like to drop the bomb just to see who was right. Anyway, in this show's version; after all the dust has settled and all the smoke has cleared, some of humanity has survived, along with some vampires. These two species are, as you would imagine, at war with each other - with the vampires all belonging to an empire and the humans being represented by the Roman catholic church. Quite why the Catholic Church is the mortal enemy of vampires in anime is something I'll never know, but it does make for interesting plots.
 | | Nice threads | This brings us to our hero, or reluctant hero in this case, Father Abel Nightroad. He's a traveling priest who is completely broke and seems to be the sort of guy who will run rather than fight. Then shortly into the first episode we see Father Nightroad reprogram a computer on an airship and you start to wonder if there is more to this than there appears; well, as wrestling commentator good old JR would say, "business is about to pick up".
Because Father Nightroad is a Crusnick; a vampire that feeds on the blood of other vampires and is in possession of what has got to be the nastiest looking scythe I've ever seen(its also made of blood). There also seems to be some sort of restraint system on his abilities, similar to the control system on Alucard in Helsing.
Of course every hero needs some sort of sidekick or associate, which brings us to Father Tres Iqus (codenamed Gunslinger) - an android with a fairly sizable pair of hand cannons and all the warmth and charm of a marble column.
You have probably have guessed by now that these aren't exactly 'read a sermon on Sunday morning and spend the rest of the week in the confessional' kind of priests. They work for the Vatican's special operations group called AX (weather it's A X or the sharp thing you cut down trees with I'm not really sure), headed by the woman known as Catherina who spends most of her time at the right hand of the pope. The pope presented here is a much younger bloke than we're used to seeing in that position.
An interesting point of note is that if you have seen Fullmetal Alchemist then you will no doubt recognize most of the voice actors as most of them worked on both shows. This anime also shows the excellent animation that Studio Gonzo is known for, quite honestly I have yet to see an anime from Gonzo I haven't liked (so either I'm easily pleased or Gonzo know their stuff, I lean in the direction of believing the second)
 | | Ditto | While its not exactly easy to condemn or place on a pedestal a series after one DVD (4 episodes), this is one of those titles that after you finish watching it you seriously consider scanning the net for fansubs just to see what happens next.
