What we have here Buttonhole fans, is yet another Japanese cartoon. In this show the story is a simple case of boy meets girl - hang on a second this is Anime - nothing's ever that simple!
The hero of this piece is a young man named Cou Van Giruet, also known as 'Cou.' Now Cou is a sky pirate and part of the crew who work for a man known simply as 'Boss'. All Cou really wants is to become the greatest sky pirate who ever lived. Thus he is always harassing Boss to allow him to go on raids with the rest of the crew, with Boss usually telling him he is too inexperienced.
Until one day with equal parts 'pure arse' and good luck, Cou finds himself in the middle of a raid on a large important looking ship. After smashing through a dome and making his grand entrance Cou is summoned by Boss, as the rest of the crew have done their job and are ready to leave.
All is well until Cou decides to check out the spoils of this raid and is somewhat puzzled by what he finds in the storage hold, a large coffin like box with some precious looking stones set into the lid. After touching these stones the lid rumbles back and the box opens.
Cou discovers what appears to be a life size mannequin (albeit one Cou finds very cute) that is, until she moves.
In case you haven't figured it out by now this is his introduction to Ren (yep as in Stimpy). Cou is right in thinking that she is quite cute, in an anime kind of way.
 | | Damn Son, thats some serious product you got in that hair of yours | Ren's full name is Reverie Metherlence, last descendant of the Metherlence clan and Shichiko-hoju (pronounced Shiko- Hoji) which very roughly translates to 'almighty weapon that makes brave men wet their dacks'. Ren is an Edel Raid, a mystical being that can combine with a human and form a powerful weapon.
Around about this time the airship is attacked forcing Cou to consider taking advantage of Ren's abilities. Ren and Cou combine allowing us to see Ren's other form, a thumping great sword with wind powers. It is also about this time we are introduced to some more of our cast members.
The team from 'Arc Aile' - the Edel Raid protection agency - namely Cisqua. Cisqua is the leader of the protection agency team, armed to the teeth and with a fuse as short as her height. Accompanying Cisqua is Rowan, her second in command who seems to be a natural at anything he tries his hand at.
We also meet his Edel Raid (the mystical beings who can merge with humans, turning themselves into weapons in the process) named Kuea. While Ren needs to sleep to recharge, Kuea's method of recharging is by pursuing a never ending quest to fill her seemingly bottomless stomach.
After a short battle Cou, Ren and the members of 'Arc Aile' abandon the airship and Cou makes a promise to Ren he will see her safely to Edel Gardens. The Edel Gardens being the fabled place where 'Edel Raids' supposedly originated from, thus beginning their quest.
While on the surface this may seem like a generic run of the mill Anime, it's certainly worth a look as you may be surprised at just how much it grows on you, so check it out.
