Remnants & Relics. Buttonhole *Special* Feature

Welcome dear reader to Remnants & Relics, the first in an ongoing series of features looking back at various aspects of yesterday's video games. This series is one that I'd hoped to kick off many months ago, but I just haven't had the time to do it justice, until now. So consider this your opportunity to put on your best pair or rose-tinted glasses, open up a luke-warm can of clichés and prepare to hop aboard the way-back-machine.... It came from beyond two dimensions! -A Look Back at Isometric Gaming-

ACMI Day Tripper

Welcome Buttonhole readers to another feature that is so choc-full of goodness that I've divided it into several sections. The top half is about the Indy video games showcased at ACMI. The bottom half is about the Pixar exhibit. It's ridiculously long and all terribly interesting to read, so you may as well read it in two halves, or just the parts that interest you. After reading about the ACMI exhibits on their website and getting more than a little excited, I decided to make the perilous trek to inner Melbourne. With time on my side and money stuffed in my pocket I ventured forth to the train station. Once on board I passed the time by staring out the window, reading a volume of Dark Horse's Concrete and snacking on tasty fruit. Arriving at Flinders St, I wandered around until inevitably finding my way out of the rat-maze like station.

Classic Comic-book Review. Kraven's Last Hunt

"Here lies Spider-Man - Slain by the Hunter" So reads the grave of one of histories greatest superheros. "But he's not dead, is he? What happened to everyone's favourite web-slinger? Spidey seems to be alive and well now, what with his three movie deal and a string of monthly Marvel comic-book titles to his name, so why was he buried six feet under? The year is 1987. The company is Marvel. The character is Sergei Kravinov also known as 'Kraven the Hunter.' Back in the 60's Stan and Steve (Lee and Ditko, respectively) churned out a heap of cool villains for the title "Amazing Spider-Man." Doctor Octopus, The Cham

Stone Cold Truth DVD The Stone Cold Truth

DVD Review

I got my hands on a copy of The Stone Cold Truth DVD and it’s the first time I’ve seen a disc where the extras are the main focus instead of the “main” feature. But this is what you get from this particular DVD all about the life of Stone Cold Steve Austin. I believe this was released in conjunction with his autobiography some time ago, so I guess it’s just a tease into what the book is about. But as a stand alone it’s good, but not great.

As I said earlier, the main feature is a 45 minute condensed facet of the life of Stone Cold Steve Austin. Included in the main feature are interviews from himself, his family, his friends and his co-workers, all telling stories about the man. From his days as “Stunning” Steve in WCW, his brief stay in ECW, through to his days as the legendary Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Some of the stories that are told are pretty interesting. Like the one about his first match in Texas in 1992. Not only was it his first match, but it was also on T.V. So Steve figured he was gonna get a bit for being on Television. He found out afterwards he was only going to receive $40 for the match. Another interesting story was when he was living and wrestling in Nashville Tennessee. He didn’t have a lot of money (making about $200-$300 a week) and the place he was staying at didn’t have a stove or oven. So for the first 3 days of the week, until he got paid, he would buy a big bag of potatoes and eat them raw. Two to three potatoes per meal, three meals per day and that was it for a few days a week. Now, personally, I can’t believe that he couldn’t light a fire somewhere, get a flat bit of metal and use that as a hot plate and cook the bloody things. Even the Wiggles know the value of a “Hot Potato, Hot Potato.” Sorry! Anyway, his stories about the late great Brian Pillman and the Hollywood Blondes are something to hear and so is his story about his eventual firing from WCW.

But as far as I’m concerned the extras are what make this DVD tolerable. The first extra is a match from 1991 with “Stunning” Steve taking on “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton for the WCW TV Title. The other match from WCW is the Tag Team Match from Clash of the Champions XXIII in 1993. It’s the Hollywood Blonde’s (“Stunning” Steve Austin & “Flyin’” Brian Pillman) Vs “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair & “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson. It also includes the TV spot that set this match up and it is really interesting and amusing stuff!

We then move onto his very short stay in ECW. Included are the hilarious promos where he imitates both Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff and some rather entertaining interviews. These interviews show just how bitter he was, when he was fired by WCW and Eric Bischoff. They are also the first glimpses of what would eventually become his Stone Cold persona. As well as that there’s a match between himself and the ECW Heavyweight Champion Mikey Whipwreck from 1995.

We finally move on to his WWF/WWE days, with his debut match from January 1996 as “The Ringmaster” taking on Scott Taylor. (Yes it Scotty Too Hottie as we know him today). They’ve also included the infamous match against the late great Owen Hart from SummerSlam 97 where Steve Austin’s neck was injured. The frustrating thing about this match, as a fan, was it was an excellent match up until the injury. It also includes tales from his family about certain times in his life and segments from his classic feud with Mr. McMahon. Such as the pouring of cement into Mr. McMahon’s corvette and his “violation” of Mr. McMahon in the hospital, Funny Stuff!

What did I think of it? Well I didn’t hate it, but it’s also as unlikely to be a bestseller as a redneck is to say “She’s too young to wear a bikini!” I repeat myself, I know, but the extras are the only reason to buy this DVD, unless you’re a HUGE “Stone Cold” fan.

Only Yesterday. Anime Review

The problem with having favourite films is that every time I watch another Studio Ghibli film it becomes my new favourite. It kind of renders the word 'favourite' meaningless when every Studio Ghibli film takes my breath away. Still, I can't complain about being thoroughly entertained by this whimsical and insightful film, "Only Yesterday". This gem was directed by Isao Takahata, well known for his anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Although Only Yesterday is a light hearted film that ambles along at a leisurely pace, it still manages to explore themes such as love, work, family relationship struggles, following your dreams and country versus city living. In the film, the main character Taeko decides to take a working vacation in the country, getting away from her office bound job and unexpectedly starts t

Speed Grapher V1. Anime Review

Well, "I don't like it" was my initial feeling when viewing this Anime for the first time. Subsequent viewings haven't changed my views a great deal. Nothing really stands out as being absolute shit but it seems that this series tries too hard. It's almost like they were more interested in creating something 'edgy' and confronting but sadly forgot to include an even remotely palatable story. The hero of this particular piece is a bloke called Tatsumi Saiga. Tatsumi is a photographer and a veteran war journalist for whom taking photos has become somewhat of a fetish. Although he seems to have become jaded - nothing is worth wasting his film on - that is, at least until he stumbles across an exclusive club for the mega rich
